House Rule check: climbing on top of Monstrous Creatures!

I’ve talked to everyone about having marines/whatever climb on top of Monstrous Creatures (think giant bugs and spiders!), everyone agrees it’s a cool and fun cinematic thing to do! So here’s the first draft of proposed house rules for climbing on top of a Monstrous Creature in assault:

Only as many models with a 25mm base that can fit on top of the MC can declare they will attempt to climb or mount the MC.

if attempting to climb on the first round of combat:
– roll charge distance, models will need enough distance to climb on top
option A: Dangerous Terrain test for each model attempting to climb, failure means a failed climb and resolve test as normal
option B: the MC gets one attack for each model attempting to climb, a hit means a failed climb and the model stays in base contact

if attempting to climb on second & subsequent rounds of combat:
– unit attempting to climb must have won or drawn in close combat the round before
– models must be in base contact to attempt climb
– then:
option A: Dangerous Terrain test for each model attempting to climb, failure means a failed climb and resolve test as normal
option B: the MC gets one attack for each model attempting to climb, a hit means a failed climb and the model stays in base contact

friendly units may also attempt to climb the MC to engage enemies mounted on the MC:
– models must be in base contact to attempt climb
– if in base contact with an enemy model when starting the climb, Dangerous Terrain test for each model attempting to climb, failure means a failed climb and resolve test as normal
– if not in base contact with an enemy model when starting to climb, the model is able to climb on top successfully

combat:
mounted models –
– for models mounting the MC, resolved as normal (intiative, WS) in case of CC weapons
– apply -1 WS modifier to all models mounted on MC (to represent having to hold on, dodge attacks and retain footing)
– models on the MC have -1 attack each, to a minimum of 1
– for models on top of the MC fighting each other, resolve attacks as normal

Monstrous Creatures –
– the Monstrous Creature must declare how many attacks will be on models that are mounted on it
– resolve hits only to models on top of the MC, any misses from the MC should be resolved as attacks against itself, ignoring poison effects
– CC attacks not declared against mounted models are resolved against other models in combat which are on the ground

movement while mounted:
– if the MC is not in assault with enemy models, it can move as normal and ram a building or vehicle (resolve as normal Smash attack, etc.). All models on top of the MC must roll under their Initiative to stay on, otherwise they fall, taking damage as normal. Falling models fall d3 inches from the MC, with the MC’s controlling player choosing where in the front or side arcs the models fall.

shooting at the MC while mounted:
– enemy units may not target the MC while it is mounted, to avoid hitting friendly units (same rule as assault). Scattered Blast hits may still affect the MC and any models mounted on it, however.

Basically, if Tyranids are meant to be the bad guy let’s all have fun doing this!

What does everyone think? I’m going for ‘fun’ over ‘perfectly’ balanced here.

  1. Have had a chat with a couple of you, I had the idea of ‘how cool would it be for jump troops to try Death From Above on Monstrous Creatures?!’, so here goes! These would be an addition to the rules above.

Jump Infantry landing on top of Monstrous Creatures
Overwatch and assault range as normal. Jump troops must make a Dangerous Terrain Test to land successfully. A failure means they must make and Armor Save and the model forfeits attacks in the first assault round. Success means they can attempt Hammer of Wrath and other attacks as normal.

Of course, this opens up the possibility of troops JUMPING DOWN from buildings and towers! Here’s what I think those rules could be, at least to start with:

Infantry jumping on top of Monstrous Creatures (from buildings, ruins, etc.)
Model must be at the same or higher level as the Monstrous Creature it will attempt to jump onto. Overwatch as normal. Assault range is measured with 2d6 as normal, but the maximum distance the model can jump (measured from edge of building or ruin) is D3 inches. Models must make a Dangerous Terrain Test to land successfully. A failure means they must make and Armor Save and the model forfeits attacks in the first assault round. Success means they can attempt Hammer of Wrath and other attacks as normal.
